In the release issued today, March 12, 2010 at 10:34 AM ET for The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), there was an error in the 1st paragraph. It should have read “Chatham-Kent Police Service officer”… instead of “Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer”… The complete and correct version follows:

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has reviewed the facts around the January 2010 vehicle death of 36-year-old Michael Henderson. Ian Scott, the Director of the SIU, has concluded there are no reasonable grounds to believe a Chatham-Kent Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in this case.

The SIU assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident. The investigation found that the following events took place on January 28:

– In the late morning, two cruisers were traveling northbound on Bear Line
Road in response to a complaint about erratic driving by a man driving a
pickup truck. The subject officer and another officer were in the second
marked cruiser.
– All of a sudden, the first cruiser drove abruptly onto the east shoulder
of the road as a pickup truck was driving straight toward the two
cruisers in the northbound lane.
– The subject officer took evasive action, and then made a three-point
turn, initiating a pursuit. The driver of the truck, later identified as
Mr. Henderson, continued to drive southbound in the wrong lane, forcing
another car off the road. The officer activated his roof lights and
continued the pursuit, staying in communication with the Communications
Centre. He communicated the traffic and road conditions to the dispatch
supervisor.
– Mr. Henderson entered the T-junction at the corner of Bear Line Rd and
Grand River Line, went onto the south shoulder, spun out, and then went
westbound along Grand River Line. The subject officer continued to

The director of Madonna’s Raising Malawi foundation is denying that there is a land dispute over the charity’s planned $15 million girls academy, calling reports that some villagers feel the project is displacing them “erroneous.”

The Associated Press has reported that the village headman took the villagers’ complaints to the local government, and that local officials have visited the area several times.However, Phillip Van den Bosche, who runs the foundation, said late Saturday that media reports of friction were “not factual.”He also said that the head of the village “made a very long speech about how grateful he was for this project” at a ceremony for the school.Raising Malawi is building the school for girls on approximately a 117-acre plot of government land near the capital, Lilongwe. Yeah, yeah. The Super Bowl (Sunday, 6 p.m., CBS, CTV). It’s big. Might be 100 million people watching. Then again, might not. Might be 60 million. Everything about the Super Bowl is big, overhyped and taken way too seriously. In the larger world of sports, the thing is a pipsqueak. But enjoy. There are alternatives this weekend, though. Saturday you can catch an Olympics primer on CTV, including Athletes In Motion (4 p.m.), comprising 11 short, artsy films about Canadian athletes; Sid the Kid vs. Alexander the Great (5 p.m.) about Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin; and The Great Tournament (7 p.m.) about filmmaker Francis Damberger taking his son Joe on a road trip to Vancouver “in anticipation of the greatest hockey tournament in the history of the game.” Also this weekend: a fine movie about an unusual woman; and the mystery of Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts.

Temple Grandin (Saturday, 8 p.m., HBO Canada)

This excellent biopic is entrancing for two reasons: an astonishing performance from Claire Danes; and the central figure is utterly compelling. Danes is almost unrecognizable as Grandin, a woman born with severe autism who eventually went through high school and university and became one of the world’s leading authorities on animal behaviour. Specifically, livestock behaviour and the design of facilities for humane slaughter. Eventually, her work transformed the design of both cattle ranches and slaughterhouses. There is just a tincture of sentimentality here, but it’s kept low-key as we see Grandin’s childhood difficulties, her often-painful experiences at school, and her journey to success – with help from her mother (Julia Ormond), an aunt (Catherine O’Hara, who just smiles through it all) and a high-school science teacher (David Strathairn). cheap flights from Gladstone to Alice Springs The real Grandin is much celebrated; a …continue reading

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Stocks churned early Wednesday afternoon as investors geared up for the Federal Reserve’s latest policy statement, due out this afternoon, and the President’s State of the Union address this evening.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) lost 20 points, or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index (SPX) lost 2 points or 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite (COMP) was little changed.

Stocks were choppy Wednesday morning as investors awaited the Fed’s rate decision — even as questions remain about whether Chairman Ben Bernanke’s term will be renewed.

The State of the Union was also in focus, along with a crop of major earnings, a new home sales report and a House hearing on the government bailout of AIG.

Stocks fell Tuesday as a selloff in the financial sector cut into an earlier rally sparked by Apple’s record quarterly results and a rise in consumer confidence. Apple is expected to introduce its new tablet computer later today.

Federal Reserve: The central bank concludes its two-day policy meeting Wednesday, with a statement due for released at around 2:15 p.m. ET.

The bankers are expected to hold interest rates steady at historic lows near zero and to hint that they will keep rates low for the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, investors will try to dissect the wording of the statement for clues about the timeline of when the Fed plans to loosen its accommodative policy.

The combination of low interest rates and the injection of trillions of dollars of stimulus into the system helped fuel the stock market rally last year and take the edge off the worst recession since the Great Depression. The Fed is unlikely to step back just yet, when the recovery is still tentative.

With his term set to expire Sunday, questions remain about whether Bernanke has enough votes in the Senate to force a confirmation vote.
